The cooling block helps considerably with the setting time of wax filling and glue.

The block can be used after filling a hole with wax filler by placing the cooling iron directly on top of the filled hole. 

This way the wax filling cools down much faster, and you get a surface that is easier to scrape off with a mini planer.
